Our official team name is Edmonton Humahumanukanukaapua'a Swim Club (EHSC). We were named after the Hawaiian state fish, as several of the founding families of the club had recently vacationed in Hawaii.

The club was started in 1985 when a group of about eight swimmers and their families broke away from the Royal Glenora team and decided to create their own team, setting up training first at Eastglen pool for the first year and then moving to the University of Alberta pool in 1986.

The Head Coach for the first year was Tim Floyd, and he didn’t receive any pay!

By 1987, the team had 40 swimmers and that was the first year Huma won provincials.

In 1988, HUMA won the long course provincials. ASSA used to alternate between long course (50 m) and short course (25 m) provincials.

The team colour was purple because no other team had it, and it was the only colour of suits available in the first year. The other two team colours were yellow and orange, because of the fish. Donna Nygrand designed the HUMA fish logo. Later the executive switched to black as the secondary colour.

Swimmers from across the greater Edmonton area became club members.

HUMA has achieved an outstanding record, winning 14 provincial championships from 1987 to 2022.
